Most new eBay sellers stall before their tenth listing, and effort is rarely the reason. The first three decisions (what to list, how to title it and what to charge) usually get made before the seller knows how eBay takes its cut. This guide follows the order the money moves: costs first, then the account, products, listings, and finally what changes once you have more than a handful of items live.
Quick answer: to sell on eBay in 2026:
- Know the fees before you price. Most categories charge 13.6% of the total sale plus $0.30 or $0.40 per order.
- Register and verify your account, choose personal or business, and add the checking account or debit card for payouts.
- Pick products with a sales record, checked against sold listings rather than asking prices.
- Build a listing eBay's search can read: an 80-character title in buyers' words, complete item specifics and clear photos.
- Ship inside your handling time, then grow by adding listings while you keep prices and stock current.

What It Costs to Sell on eBay Before You Keep a Dollar
Guides that open with "pick a product" teach the sequence backwards. eBay takes its cut before you see any money, so the fees decide which products are worth listing at all.
According to eBay's selling fees page, most categories carry a final value fee of 13.6% on the total amount of the sale up to $7,500 (2.35% on any portion above that). The total includes the item price, shipping, handling and the sales tax the buyer pays, not just your price. There is also a per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10 or less and $0.40 on larger orders. You get up to 250 zero insertion fee listings a month, then pay $0.35 per listing, and each monthly renewal of a Good 'Til Cancelled listing counts toward that allowance. Some categories use different rates, so check yours before you set a price.
Here is what that means on three example orders. Fees below leave out sales tax, which would add a little to each fee in practice:
| Item sells for (free shipping) | eBay fees (13.6% + per-order fee) | Item cost + shipping you pay | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| $15.00 | $2.44 | $6.00 + $3.50 | $3.06 |
| $45.00 | $6.52 | $22.00 + $6.00 | $10.48 |
| $120.00 | $16.72 | $68.00 + $9.00 | $26.28 |
Two things fall out of that table. You keep roughly a fifth of each sale on every row, but the dollars per sale grow more than eightfold from the cheapest item to the dearest, for about the same packing and listing work. And a $2 rise in your cost wipes out about two-thirds of the margin on the $15 row. That second point ends more new stores than any other, and it is why keeping prices in line with costs matters so much later on.
Two optional costs are worth deciding early:
- An eBay Store. eBay's Store fees page lists a Starter Store at $7.95 a month and a Basic Store at $27.95 a month on monthly renewal, with Basic including 1,000 zero insertion fee fixed-price listings. It becomes worth pricing once you regularly pass 250 listings.
- Promoted Listings. On the general strategy you pick an ad rate between 2% and 100% of the total sale and pay only if the item sells within 30 days of a click on your ad. eBay's general strategy page says it is open to Above Standard or Top Rated sellers with enough account activity, so a brand-new account may need to wait. Prove a listing converts first, then promote it.
To model your own categories, our guide to calculating eBay fees on a real order walks through the arithmetic, the eBay sales calculator guide scales it to a month, and how selling on eBay works covers listing, payment and payout end to end.
Opening a Seller Account That Clears Verification the First Time
Account setup is the step people rush and then spend a week untangling. Anything inconsistent between your name, address and bank details can hold up your first payout, which is worse than holding up your first listing because by then you have already shipped.
Register. eBay's registration page asks for an email address, contact address and phone number, or you can continue with Facebook, Google or Apple. If you already buy on eBay, you can sell from the same account. Our guide to how old you have to be to sell on eBay covers the age rules.
Choose personal or business. A business account asks for your business name, type and address, plus any beneficial owners, officers, directors or account managers. You can upgrade a personal account to a business account later, but eBay says you can't switch back, and it asks that your bank account type matches your eBay account type.
Set up payouts. eBay's payouts page says US sellers are paid to a checking account or a Visa or Mastercard debit card. You can choose daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly payouts, and a payout typically takes another 1 to 3 business days to clear once eBay starts it. eBay can place holds on funds, for example while it resolves a registration discrepancy, so use your legal name and details that match your bank.
Set your policies once. Create reusable shipping, returns and payment policies before your first listing so every listing inherits them. Be careful with handling time: eBay's handling time page says it runs from when you receive payment to when the carrier scans your package, and eBay recommends no more than 2 business days. Set a time you can hit in your worst week, not your best. Our guide to how long eBay sellers have to ship goes through the rules.
Once you have made your first sale you can use Seller Hub, which eBay says is free and brings orders, listings, marketing, performance, payments, research and reports into one place.
How to Sell on eBay Profitably: Choosing Products the Market Already Proved
The most expensive first-month mistake is listing something you find interesting instead of something with a sales record. eBay makes the check easy. Search for the item and filter the results to sold items, and you see real sale prices and dates. Active listings only show what sellers are asking.
For more depth, eBay's Product research tool in Seller Hub is available to all sellers and covers the last 3 years of eBay sales data: sales trends, average sold price, sold price range, average shipping cost and how many sellers sold the item. It also shows a sell-through figure for searches of items sold in the last 90 days.
Read recent sold results for three things: the real price band, how often the item sells, and how many active listings compete for that demand. An item with a dozen sales last month against 40 active listings is a healthier target than one with 3 sales against 400. Then look at the titles on the sold listings, because those are the phrasings that worked.
Here is the check on an example. Say you are looking at a mid-range wireless keyboard. The sold view shows 14 sales in 30 days between $28 and $34, against 60 active listings. That is steady demand at a workable price. Now subtract: at $31, eBay's fee is about $4.62, the item costs you $16 and shipping $4.50, so you keep about $5.88. That is worth listing. Run the same check on an item with 2 sales, 300 competitors and a $9 price and you can drop it before you waste an evening. Product selection is mostly doing that subtraction before you list rather than after the first payout.
Checking sold listings by hand caps you at a handful of products an evening. Ecomli, a non-API browser extension for eBay dropshippers, speeds that step up. Its Product Hunting reads a competitor eBay seller's sold history or current listings and matches the products to an Amazon or AliExpress supplier, ready to send to Create Listings. It can also search Amazon keywords and Best Sellers pages, or collect an AliExpress store's products from a pasted link. You start from items that have already sold, with a supplier matched, though a match is a lead to check rather than proof of profit.

Building a Listing eBay's Search Engine Can Actually Read
eBay's Best Match help page lists what decides where a listing appears: how closely it matches the search, how popular the item is, the price, the quality of the listing (description and photos), how complete it is, your returns and handling terms, and your track record as a seller. It says there is "no secret" beyond good listing and selling practice, and that a new listing should appear in search within 24 hours.
- Title. You get up to 80 characters. Spend them on the words buyers type: brand, model number, size, color, material and condition. Drop filler like "L@@K" or strings of exclamation marks. Our guide to eBay listing title best practices shows what goes where.
- Item specifics. eBay's item specifics guidance says buyers filter search results by them, and your item only shows in a filtered result if you've added the matching specific. Fill in every required one and as many recommended ones as apply.
- Photos. You can add up to 24 photos free. Show the item from several angles on a plain, evenly lit background, with labels, tags and any flaws. Honest flaw photos also cut returns.
- Description. Put the key facts near the top and keep it readable on a phone. Our guides to what to write in an eBay listing description and mobile-first listing templates have examples.
Format. eBay's fixed-price listings page says fixed-price listings are Good 'Til Cancelled by default and relist every month until the item sells or you end it. Auctions suit scarce or hard-to-price items, and we compare the two in auction versus Buy It Now. If one product comes in several sizes or colors, a single listing with variations usually beats several near-identical listings, as our variation listings guide explains. For the ranking mechanics, see how eBay's Cassini search engine ranks listings.
How to Sell on eBay at Volume: What Changes After Listing 50
Somewhere around 50 live listings the job changes. Until then you make decisions one item at a time. After that you are keeping a catalog accurate while suppliers raise prices, items sell out and competitors reprice. Three things break first:
- Margin erosion. A supplier raises a price by a few dollars and a listing set at a healthy margin starts losing money on every sale.
- Stock mismatch. A supplier sells out, an order lands, and you have to cancel. eBay's seller performance policy counts a transaction defect when a seller cancels an order unexpectedly, for example because the item was out of stock.
- Dead weight. Listings that never get a view still use your free listing allowance and count toward your selling limit.
Volume also runs into eBay's own ceilings. eBay's selling limits page says limits are reviewed monthly based on your sales and feedback, that you can request an increase when you get close, and that Good 'Til Cancelled listings count toward them. Our guide to growing your eBay selling limits covers when to ask. Clean fulfillment also moves you toward Top Rated status, which needs at least 100 transactions and $1,000 in sales with US buyers over 12 months plus low defect and late-shipment rates. Our guide to becoming a Top Rated seller explains the thresholds. When you are ready to add products in batches rather than one form at a time, the bulk listing workflow is the next step, and our comparison of eBay listing software covers the tools.
How to Do This in Ecomli: From First Listings to a Catalog You Can Keep Current
Ecomli works through the eBay seller account already signed in to your desktop Chrome browser, so there is no API connection to authorize. For a seller who sources from Amazon or AliExpress, the steps above map onto it like this:
- Find products with a sales record. Run Product Hunting on a competitor's eBay store and review the matched Amazon or AliExpress suppliers. Filter by price, keywords and reviews, and save the hunts you want to come back to.
- Create the listings. Send your picks to Create Listings. It prices each item with your markup, writes optional AI titles and descriptions from the supplier's facts, applies your description template and fills eBay's listing form in your own seller session, up to 10 listings at a time. Check the item specifics on each draft before you publish.
- Screen before publishing. Safety Shield checks products, AI copy and the eBay draft for flagged brands and restricted items. It is a checkpoint, not a guarantee, and the decision to publish stays yours.
- Keep prices and stock current. Stock Monitoring checks Amazon and AliExpress stock and prices for your Ecomli listings, updates the eBay price with your markup and price-change tolerance, and sets quantity to 0 or ends the listing when an item sells out, following your out-of-stock rule. If a supplier read fails, the listing is left unchanged. The rule design is covered in our guide to repricing that defends your margin floor.
- Clear dead listings. On Pro and Scale, Auto Pruner ends listings with zero views and/or zero sales over 15, 30, 45 or 60 days in one click, using fresh Seller Hub reports and the minimum listing age and removal limits you set.
Supplier ordering follows your buying limits, a maximum purchase price and a maximum loss: Starter orders manually, Pro places the order in your browser when you click Auto Order, and on Scale, once you turn it on, Advanced Auto Ordering runs on Ecomli's servers and places the supplier order for new eBay orders without a click, as long as each order is within your buying limits. Product Hunting, Create Listings, Stock Monitoring and Auto Pruner run in your browser while it is open. Our automation overview shows how the pieces fit, and when you're ready you can create an Ecomli account and start with a first batch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it worth selling on eBay in 2026?
It can be, as long as you price with the fees included. The buyer base is large: eBay reported 136 million active buyers in its second-quarter 2026 results. What decides whether it is worth it for you is the margin left after the 13.6% final value fee, the per-order fee, shipping and your item cost.
How much does eBay charge to sell in 2026?
In most categories, 13.6% of the total sale (including shipping and sales tax) up to $7,500, plus a per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10 or less or $0.40 above that. Listing is free for up to 250 listings a month, then $0.35 each. Optional extras such as Promoted Listings or an eBay Store cost more, and some categories use different rates.
How much can I sell on eBay without paying tax in 2026?
There is no sales amount that is automatically tax-free. What changes with volume is reporting: for the 2025 tax year, eBay's tax reporting page lists the Form 1099-K threshold as gross payments over $20,000 and more than 200 transactions. Whether you owe tax depends on your own situation, such as whether you sold personal items at a gain or run a reselling business, and eBay says it can't give tax advice. Keep records of what you paid for items and check with your tax authority or a tax professional.
What is the $600 rule on eBay?
It refers to a Form 1099-K reporting threshold of $600 that a 2021 law set for payment platforms and online marketplaces. It never took full effect: it was delayed and then reversed. eBay's 1099-K update says the July 2025 tax bill permanently restored the threshold of more than $20,000 and 200 transactions. Some states set lower thresholds, so check yours.
How do you sell on eBay with no feedback history?
Start with small, low-risk sales you can ship quickly, answer messages promptly, and ship inside your stated handling time. A run of clean small transactions builds a more convincing profile than one large sale. Accurate photos and honest condition notes cut returns, which protect a new account. If you dropship, make sure prices and stock stay in line with your supplier, because a cancellation for an out-of-stock item counts as a defect.
How many items can a new eBay seller list per month?
New accounts have monthly selling limits, which you can see in the Monthly limits section of the Seller Hub Overview. eBay reviews them every month based on your sales and buyer feedback and raises them as your history grows. You can request an increase when you get close to your limit.
Should new sellers use auction or fixed-price listings?
Fixed price suits most sellers. Fixed-price listings are Good 'Til Cancelled by default and relist every month until they sell or you end them, which matters when you sell the same product repeatedly. Auctions work better for scarce or hard-to-price items where bidding sets the value.
How long does it usually take to make a first sale on eBay?
There is no set timeline. A new listing should appear in search within 24 hours, and after that it depends mostly on product choice, price and title. A well-titled listing in a category with steady demand can sell quickly, while a vague title in a crowded category can sit for months. If nothing sells after a few weeks, check the title against the words buyers actually search and your price against recent sold results.
What app can I use to list items on eBay?
For dropshippers who source from Amazon or AliExpress, Ecomli is our pick (we make it). Its Create Listings builds eBay listings from supplier links or Product Hunting picks, up to 10 at a time, with optional AI titles and descriptions, and Stock Monitoring keeps price and quantity in line with the supplier afterward. For occasional sellers listing their own items, eBay's own listing form and app are enough. Our guide to free eBay listing software covers what the free options include.
What is the fastest way to learn how to sell on eBay?
List a few real items in your first week rather than reading for a month. eBay's feedback loop is concrete: you see which titles get views, which photos get clicks and which prices get offers. After 30 days, compare your sold and unsold listings and adjust the titles and prices. That exercise teaches more than any amount of reading, because it is measured against your own categories.
Every plan includes Product Hunting, AI listing tools, Stock Monitoring, Safety Shield, Tracking Conversions and the profit dashboard, with unlimited active listings. Compare Starter, Pro and Scale → Monthly billing in USD · 7-day money-back guarantee.
