How to Cancel an Offer on eBay (Seller's Guide 2026)

How to Cancel an Offer on eBay (Seller's Guide 2026)

You send offers to watchers on Friday, your supplier raises the price on Saturday, and by Monday every accepted offer sells at a loss. How to cancel an offer on eBay depends on which offer you mean, because eBay uses the word for several different things and only some of them can be stopped. This guide covers each one, as a seller and as a buyer, with the timings from eBay's own help pages.

Quick answer: A Best Offer a buyer sends you can be declined, countered or left to expire, and you have 24 hours to respond. Automated offers you send to interested buyers can be turned off from the Offers tab in Seller Hub, but eBay's help describes no way to recall an offer that has already gone out, and each one is valid for 96 hours or until the listing sells. Ending the listing is the only sure way to stop those. Once a buyer accepts and pays, you have an order, not an offer.

Which offer are you trying to cancel?

Start by naming the offer. Sellers looking for a single Cancel button usually end up on the wrong screen.

What you want to cancelCan you? What works
A Best Offer a buyer sent youYesDecline it, counter it, or let your 24-hour response window pass
Automated offers to interested buyersPartlyTurn the automation off in the Offers tab; offers already sent stay valid for 96 hours or until the listing sells
A rule-based offer (Store subscribers)YesDelete the rule in Buyer Groups on the Seller Hub Marketing tab
A counteroffer you sentNo recall describedIt expires after 96 hours, or when someone accepts first
An offer you made as a buyerSometimesRetract it if 12+ hours remain and you offered less than an hour ago
An offer the buyer accepted and paid forNoIt's an order now, so use the order cancellation flow

The pattern is consistent. eBay lets you stop future offers, but it rarely lets you take back one a buyer already holds. That's why the cheapest fix sits upstream, in a listing price that still makes money after the discount. Our guide to a deliberate eBay pricing strategy covers that side, and how Best Offer works on eBay explains the feature from the start.

How to decline a Best Offer a buyer sent you

This is the easy case. A buyer's offer is a proposal, and you don't have to accept it. Per eBay's Best Offer help for sellers, you have 24 hours after receiving an offer to choose how to respond, and your options are to accept it and end the listing, send a counteroffer, decline it, or let it expire.

  1. Open Seller Hub and go to Active listings with offers, or the Offers tab. In My eBay, offers show in the Active section.
  2. Open the offer you want to close.
  3. Select Decline. If you'd rather keep talking, send a counteroffer priced between their number and your Buy It Now price.

Two limits matter if you get a lot of offers. Buyers can make up to three offers per item in most categories, so declining one doesn't end the conversation. And you and the buyer can each send a maximum of 5 counteroffers, with each counteroffer expiring after 96 hours. Whoever accepts a counteroffer first wins the item.

If you'd rather not handle every offer by hand, set automatic responses in the listing's Pricing section. Offers at or above your upper limit are accepted automatically, offers below your lower limit are declined automatically, and anything in between waits for you. eBay notes that automatic responses can't be used with sale events, offers that include extra buyer terms, or in categories where the feature isn't supported.

How to stop offers you sent to interested buyers

Offers you send to watchers and cart holders cause the most trouble, because they go out in batches and can keep going out after you've forgotten about them. According to eBay's seller help, offers go to the 30 most recent interested buyers, and eBay keeps sending up to 30 offers every 48 hours until all interested buyers have received one. Each offer is valid for 96 hours or until the listing sells, whichever comes first. The offer has to be at least 5% below your Buy It Now price, and shipping isn't included in the offer price.

To turn off automated offers on a listing, start from the Offers tab in Seller Hub:

  1. Select the item.
  2. Select the three dots in the Actions column.
  3. Click End, then Confirm.

To change the offer instead of stopping it, choose Edit from the same three dots. You can adjust the offer amount, the message, the automation dates and whether counteroffers are allowed. Store subscribers running rule-based offers should go to Buyer Groups on the Seller Hub Marketing tab, select the rule and choose Delete. Rules can run for up to 150 days, so a forgotten one can keep discounting new listings for months.

Price changes affect the automation too. If you increase the Buy It Now price, eBay says the automatic offer continues and adjusts accordingly. If you lower the price below the current automatic offer amount, offer sending pauses. Our guide to sending offers to watchers on eBay covers eligibility and setup.

What about offers that already went out?

eBay's help pages don't describe a way to recall an individual offer once it's in a buyer's inbox, so assume it stays live for its 96 hours. If accepting it would cost you money, the fallback is to end the listing. eBay lets you end a fixed-price listing at any time, with or without open offers, and nobody can buy an item that's no longer listed. It's a blunt fix. You'd put the item back up as a new listing afterwards, and sellers on eBay's community forum point out that the old listing's watchers don't follow it. Our guides to ending and canceling eBay listings and relisting an item walk through both steps.

How to retract an offer you made as a buyer

Sellers get asked about this often, and it's also how to back out of an offer you made on someone else's item. Per eBay's Best Offer help for buyers, you can retract an offer or counteroffer only when both of these are true:

  • There are 12 hours or more left before the listing ends.
  • You placed your most recent offer less than an hour ago.

You can't retract once the listing ends in less than 12 hours and more than an hour has passed since your offer, once the seller has accepted, declined or countered, or if you've already made 5 offers in that category. On desktop, go to Bids/Offers in My eBay, find the offer, select Review offer and then Retract offer.

If you're on the eBay app or a mobile browser, eBay's help points you to the Best Offer cancellation form instead of the Bids/Offers steps. That's usually the answer when someone says they can't retract an offer in the app. Offers a seller sends you are simpler: you can accept, decline with Decline offer, or counter, and each one is valid for 96 hours or until an offer is accepted. If you're dealing with an auction, our guide to removing a bid on eBay covers bid retractions, which follow different rules.

What you can't cancel, and what to do instead

An offer the buyer accepted. eBay's buyer help says that even after a seller accepts an offer, the item stays available to other buyers until the buyer completes payment. Once they pay, you have an order, and the route is an order cancellation. Be careful with the reason. eBay's seller performance policy counts it as a transaction defect when a seller cancels unexpectedly, for example because the item is out of stock. Our walkthrough on canceling an order as an eBay seller covers the steps, and our guide to seller performance metrics explains what defects do to your account.

A counteroffer you already sent. eBay describes no way to pull one back. It expires after 96 hours, or sooner if someone accepts. Counter from a number you can live with, not a number you hope gets turned down.

The ad fee on an accepted offer. If you run Promoted Listings general campaigns, accepting a Best Offer doesn't switch the ad fee off. Per eBay's general campaign help, the fee applies when a buyer purchases a promoted item from a general ad that any buyer clicked in the most recent 30 days, it's charged on the item's total sale amount including price, shipping and taxes, and for an accepted Best Offer it uses the ad rate in effect at the time of the sale. Our guide to running profitable Promoted Listings campaigns shows how to set rates that leave room for discounts.

Offers on an auction that got a bid. When a bid lands on an auction-style listing with Best Offer, eBay declines current offers and counteroffers automatically, and buyers can't make new ones.

Why sellers want to cancel: the margin under the offer

Sellers rarely want to cancel an offer because they changed their mind about the buyer. They want to cancel because the number under the offer moved: the supplier raised the price, the item went out of stock, or the listing was priced for a cost that no longer exists.

Here's how thin that gets. Say your Buy It Now price is $40 with free shipping and you send a 5% offer, the minimum eBay allows, so the buyer pays $38. eBay's final value fee for most categories is 13.6% of the total sale plus $0.40 on orders over $10, per its selling fees page, which comes to $5.57. If your supplier charges $30 with delivery, you keep $2.43. Add a 5% Promoted Listings ad rate and the $1.90 ad fee leaves $0.53, before sales tax, which both percentages also apply to. If the supplier moves to $32 before the buyer accepts, the same sale loses $1.47. That's the real reason sellers go looking for a cancel button.

The fix is the order of operations: price from current supplier cost first, then decide the discount. Our breakdown of the margin math behind eBay dropshipping goes further, margin-defense repricing covers the floor you shouldn't discount through, and eBay listing promotions are often a better tool than offers when what you really want is a sale event.

How to do this in Ecomli: keep the price under your offers current

Ecomli is a non-API browser extension for eBay dropshippers. It works through the eBay seller account already signed in to your desktop Chrome browser, so there's no API connection to authorize, and it keeps your listings in line with what your Amazon or AliExpress supplier charges. That link is what makes an offer safe to send. Here's the setup we'd use before turning on offers to watchers:

  1. Set a markup that survives a 5% offer. When you create listings, Ecomli prices each product with your markup rules. Work out the fee, ad rate and supplier cost at 5% below your Buy It Now price, as in the example above, and set the markup so that number is still positive.
  2. Turn on Stock Monitoring. Stock Monitoring checks supplier stock and prices for your Ecomli listings and updates the eBay price and quantity using your rules, including a price-change tolerance and a restock quantity. When the supplier cost rises, your Buy It Now price follows, and eBay says an automatic offer adjusts when you increase the price. If a supplier read fails, the listing is held unchanged rather than ended.
  3. Choose an out-of-stock rule. Stock Monitoring can set the quantity to 0 or end the listing when the supplier runs out, so a buyer can't check out on an item you can't source.
  4. Check the result weekly. The Overview dashboard shows eBay sales, fees, Promoted Listings costs, refunds and recorded supplier costs by day or period, so you can see whether a week of discounted offers made money after ad fees. Profit there is only as complete as the supplier costs you record.

If you want to try this on your own store, you can create an Ecomli account and set up Stock Monitoring before you send your next batch of offers. FAQ: how to cancel an offer on eBay

Can I cancel an offer on eBay as a seller?

Partly. You can decline a buyer's Best Offer, delete a rule-based offer, and turn off automated offers to interested buyers from the Offers tab in Seller Hub. eBay's help doesn't describe a way to recall an offer you've already sent, which stays valid for 96 hours or until the listing sells. Ending the listing is the only sure way to stop those.

Why can't I retract an offer on the eBay app?

eBay's help says that on the eBay app or a mobile browser you retract through the Best Offer cancellation form, not the Bids/Offers steps used on desktop. Even then, you can only retract if the listing has 12 or more hours left, you made the offer less than an hour ago, and the seller hasn't responded yet.

How do I retract or withdraw an offer I made on eBay?

On desktop, go to Bids/Offers in My eBay, find the offer, select Review offer and then Retract offer. It only works if there are 12 or more hours left on the listing and you placed your most recent offer less than an hour ago. If the seller has already accepted, declined or countered, it's too late.

How long does an eBay offer last?

A seller has 24 hours to respond to a buyer's Best Offer. Counteroffers expire after 96 hours. Offers a seller sends to interested buyers are valid for 96 hours or until the listing sells, whichever comes first.

Can you cancel an offer on eBay after it's been accepted?

Not as an offer. The item stays available to other buyers until the buyer pays, and once they pay you have an order. From there you either fulfill it or use the order cancellation flow, and a cancellation because the item is out of stock counts as a transaction defect.

What offer discount is safe on a dropshipping listing?

eBay sets the minimum for offers you send at 5% below your Buy It Now price. Whether that's safe depends on whether your listing price still reflects your current supplier cost after fees and any ad rate. Keeping eBay prices matched to supplier prices with Ecomli's Stock Monitoring, and checking the result in the Overview dashboard, turns the discount into a decision you've already costed.
