eBay Free Shipping: When It Pays and How to Price It (2026)

Woman on a gray sofa holding a bank card and phone at checkout, the buyer eBay free shipping is priced for

Quick answer: eBay free shipping usually pays for sellers because eBay charges its final value fee on the total sale either way, so moving the shipping cost into the item price costs you nothing extra in fees. Buyers lean toward free-shipping listings at the same total price, and eBay recommends it as a permanent setting. Use flat or calculated shipping for heavy items whose cost swings by buyer location, and a free-over-$X rule to lift order size.

Most sellers ask the question the wrong way round. They wonder whether they can afford to give shipping away, when nothing is being given away at all: the buyer still pays for delivery, inside the price instead of beside it. The real questions are how eBay free shipping changes what buyers click, how to price it so your margin survives, and which items should never carry it. This guide works through all three with eBay's own fee rules and a worked example you can copy into a spreadsheet.

What eBay free shipping changes for buyers and fees

eBay is direct about buyer behavior. Its Seller Center shipping guide says buyers are more likely to choose an item with free shipping over an item with a shipping fee, even if the total cost is the same, and tells sellers to add the shipping cost into the item price. Its shipping discounts page goes further: since buyers are attracted to free-shipping listings, eBay's overall recommendation is to offer free shipping as a permanent feature of your listings. The same page notes that listings with free shipping and delivery within 1-3 days stand out on the search results page.

The fee side is just as clear. eBay's final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, and that total includes the item price, handling charges, any shipping collected from the buyer and sales tax, plus a per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10.00 or less and $0.40 above that. For most categories the rate is 13.6% on the first $7,500. A $19.99 item with $5.00 shipping and a $24.99 item with free shipping produce the same fee, because the total is the same.

Three practical effects follow:

  • Search and filters. Buyers who tick the free shipping filter never see your charged-shipping listing, and the price they compare in results is the one with no extra line under it.
  • Fees. No fee penalty. If you offer free domestic shipping plus a faster or international option, eBay calculates the shipping portion of the fee from the cheapest domestic option you offer.
  • Price perception. Your item price rises by the shipping amount, so you need to know your break-even before you change anything.

If you are still setting up the basics, our guide to building an eBay shipping policy covers where these settings live, and the eBay fee formula and fee tables show the full rate list by category. If you dropship, the price side of this guide is where Ecomli fits. Ecomli is a non-API browser extension for eBay dropshippers that works through your signed-in eBay seller account and prices each listing from the supplier's item and delivery cost, which we come back to below.

Free shipping vs calculated shipping on eBay, flat rates and thresholds

eBay gives you four practical ways to charge for delivery. The right one depends on how much the shipping cost changes from buyer to buyer and how often people buy more than one item from you.

OptionWhat the buyer seesFee on shippingBest forWatch out for
Free shippingOne price, "Free delivery" labelNone, since nothing is collected for shippingLight items and supplier-shipped items with a known delivery costPrice the delivery cost in, or it comes out of your margin
Flat rateItem price plus one fixed shipping chargeCharged on the shipping you collectItems with a steady shipping cost you want to show separatelyBuyers far away cost more than the flat rate covers
CalculatedShipping set by the buyer's location and package sizeCharged on the shipping you collectHeavy or bulky items you ship yourselfYou must enter accurate weight and dimensions
Free over a thresholdFree shipping once the cart passes your amountDepends on whether the buyer qualifiesStores with many low-priced items buyers combineSet the bar just above your average order value

The threshold option uses eBay's promotional shipping rules. eBay's help page on shipping discounts gives free shipping on orders over $25 as an example, and a promotional rule overrides any flat or calculated combined-shipping rules on the listings it covers. eBay's own tip is to set the threshold slightly above your average order value so buyers add one more item to qualify. Our walkthrough of the eBay shipping calculator covers the calculated option in depth, so this guide stays on the free-shipping decision.

Is free shipping worth it on eBay for every listing? No. It is worth it wherever your shipping cost is predictable, which for most dropshippers means almost everywhere.

How to price eBay free shipping without losing margin

Sellers often slip by taking shipping off a listing without moving the price. Here's how to avoid that with one line of math: when you fold a shipping cost into the item price, eBay takes its fee on the added amount too, so the price has to rise by a little more than the shipping cost itself.

Hypothetical example: a phone stand costs $8.50 from the supplier plus $2.10 delivery, so $10.60 lands on your account per order. You list it at $24.99 with free shipping in a category charged at 13.6%. The final value fee is 13.6% of $24.99 ($3.40) plus the $0.40 order fee, so $3.80. You keep $24.99 minus $3.80 minus $10.60, which is $10.59 before sales tax effects and any ad spend.

Now say you had been charging $2.10 for shipping and want to make it free while keeping that $10.59. Divide the shipping cost by one minus the fee rate: $2.10 divided by 0.864 is $2.43. Add $2.43 to the item price, not $2.10, and the extra fee is covered.

  1. Write down your full landed cost per order: supplier item price plus supplier delivery charge.
  2. Add your target profit and divide by one minus your fee rate (0.864 at 13.6%).
  3. If you run Promoted Listings, include the ad rate in that rate before you divide.
  4. Round to a price ending your buyers are used to and re-check the result.

The ad rate matters because eBay's general campaign ad rate is a percentage of the total sale amount, shipping included, charged when the item sells within 30 days of a click on the ad. In the example above, a 5% ad rate adds $1.25 and leaves $9.34. Our guide to profitable Promoted Listings campaigns shows how to set rates against that margin.

The harder part is that the $2.10 delivery charge does not stay $2.10. Suppliers change prices and delivery fees, and a free-shipping price that worked in March can lose money by June.

This is where tooling earns its keep. Ecomli is a non-API browser extension for eBay dropshippers that works through the eBay seller account already signed in to your desktop Chrome browser, so there is no API connection to authorize. When it creates a listing from AliExpress, it prices the item from the exact per-variant item cost plus the delivery cost, then applies your markup.

Its Stock Monitoring then checks supplier stock and prices for your Ecomli listings and updates the eBay price using your rules, so a free-shipping price moves when the supplier's cost does. Our breakdown of repricer margin floors covers the same idea for wider price changes.

Free shipping when your supplier ships the order

Dropshippers get the easiest version of this decision. A seller packing boxes at home pays a different label price for a buyer next door and a buyer across the country, so free shipping means pricing for the far end. A supplier shipping on your behalf usually charges one delivery cost per item regardless of where your buyer lives, which makes free shipping a clean price adjustment instead of a gamble.

What still needs care is the delivery promise attached to the free label. eBay rewards free shipping paired with fast delivery, and your handling time plus the supplier's transit time decide the estimate buyers see. Set handling time to what your supplier actually achieves, as our guide to eBay handling time explains, and get valid tracking onto each order as soon as it exists.

How to do this in Ecomli

  1. Set your markup rules once, so every AliExpress listing Ecomli creates is priced from the supplier item plus delivery cost.
  2. Turn on Stock Monitoring rules for price changes, so supplier cost rises reach your eBay price instead of your margin.
  3. Use Tracking Conversions with Aquiline to turn supported AliExpress tracking and Amazon TBA numbers into eBay-compatible tracking that Ecomli adds to the eBay order after its automatic checks. Our explainer on AliExpress tracking numbers on eBay covers how that works.
  4. Check the Overview dashboard weekly. It shows eBay sales, fees, Promoted Listings costs, refunds, supplier costs and recorded profit by period, so you can see whether free-shipping listings still clear your target.

All three plans include these tools, and you can create your Ecomli account when you are ready to set them up.

When eBay free shipping costs you money, and what to use instead

Free shipping is a default, not a rule. A few situations call for something else.

  • Heavy or bulky items you ship yourself. When the label price between a near and a far buyer differs by a large share of the item price, calculated shipping keeps nearby buyers from overpaying and distant buyers from costing you money.
  • Very cheap items. A $4 item with a $4 delivery cost becomes an $8 item. If that looks wrong next to competitors, sell it in a multi-pack, or lean on a free-over-$X rule so buyers combine it with other items. Our guide to combined shipping covers the rules eBay applies when they do.
  • International orders. Free domestic shipping and charged international shipping can sit on the same listing, and eBay's fee on shipping is then based on the cheapest domestic option.
  • Multi-quantity buyers. If many orders contain several units, a volume discount or a threshold rule gives the buyer a reason to add more while your per-order delivery cost is spread across a bigger sale.

For everything else, free shipping plus an accurate price is the simplest setup. It also leaves one less number for buyers to weigh when they compare you with another listing for the same product.

eBay free shipping: frequently asked questions

Is it smart to do free shipping on eBay?

For most sellers, yes. eBay says buyers prefer free-shipping listings even at the same total cost and recommends free shipping as a permanent setting. It works best when you add the shipping cost into the item price and know your break-even. Heavy items you ship yourself are the main exception.

Do you pay eBay fees on free shipping?

eBay charges the final value fee on the total amount of the sale. With free shipping there is no shipping charge in that total, so you pay no fee on shipping, but the higher item price that covers delivery is part of the total. In practice the fee is the same as charging the same amount as separate shipping.

Is there an eBay free shipping code for sellers?

The free shipping codes buyers search for come from eBay's own promotions on eligible items, not from individual sellers. As a seller, you create your own offers instead: a promotional shipping rule such as free shipping over $25, or coded coupons through Seller Hub, which our guide to eBay seller coupons walks through.

Why can't I change my eBay listing to free shipping?

The free shipping box only appears once a primary domestic shipping service is selected. Pick a service under domestic shipping in the listing form or your shipping policy, then tick free shipping. If the listing uses a business policy, change the policy rather than the single listing.

eBay's combined shipping guidance recommends listing items that already meet your free-shipping threshold with free shipping from the start, because those listings are placed higher in buyers' search results. Shipping is one input among many, so pair it with strong titles and item specifics, which our explainer on eBay's Cassini search engine covers.

The bottom line

eBay free shipping is the right default for most listings because eBay's fee works off the total sale either way and buyers pick free-shipping listings at the same price. Price the delivery cost in with the fee-adjusted formula, keep calculated shipping for heavy self-shipped items, and use a free-over-$X rule to grow order size. For dropshippers, the work is keeping that price right as supplier costs move: Ecomli's markup pricing and Stock Monitoring keep free-shipping prices in line with supplier costs, and Ecomli's Overview dashboard shows whether each listing still makes money.
