eBay Email Marketing: How Sellers Reach Past Buyers

eBay Email Marketing: How Sellers Reach Past Buyers

eBay email marketing works differently from email marketing on your own website, because the marketplace holds the buyer list and sends the emails for you. This guide covers the tools the marketplace gives sellers today, where each one sits in Seller Hub, and the order messages that bring past buyers back. Ecomli is a non-API browser extension for dropshippers that works through the seller account already signed in to your Chrome browser.

Quick answer: eBay email marketing happens inside eBay, because the marketplace keeps buyer email addresses private. Store subscribers send Store newsletters to followers, subscribers and past buyers, pair them with coded coupons or sale events from the Marketing tab, and send offers to watchers, while order messages carry the rest. Ecomli, our product, handles those purchase, shipping and feedback messages with rule-based Auto Messages.

How eBay email marketing works for sellers

On eBay, buyers opt in by following your store or subscribing to its newsletter, and the marketplace delivers your campaigns to them under its own rules. That is the shape of email marketing eBay allows: eBay holds the addresses, sends the email and caps how often a buyer hears from you.

Your job is to give people a reason to follow you, then give each email something worth opening, such as a coupon, a sale event or new stock. Store newsletters reach subscribers, followers and past buyers, offers and coupons reach shoppers who showed interest, and order messages can go to every buyer.

For the wider picture beyond email, including listings, pricing and ads, see our broader guide to marketing an eBay store.

Why you never see a buyer's email address

eBay's messaging system stops members from seeing each other's personal email addresses. Each member gets a static alias, and the marketplace passes messages sent to that alias on to the real inbox. There is no customer email list to export into an outside email tool.

eBay's member-to-member contact policy sets the boundary. Members may not make offers to buy and sell outside of eBay or exchange personal information other than names, including email addresses and phone numbers. The rule covers every message sent on the platform, including My Messages and Best Offer, and spam between members is not allowed.

In practice, keep every message about the order or about something the buyer can do on eBay. Leave out email addresses, phone numbers and links to other stores. For the inbox mechanics, see how to message a buyer through eBay.

What's in the eBay Marketing tab

The eBay Marketing tab in Seller Hub holds discounts, coupons and buyer groups. Store newsletters sit under the Store tab, and ads run from the Advertising dashboard. Most of these tools need an eBay Store, so check which Store subscription tier fits your volume before you plan campaigns around them.

Discounts only apply to fixed-price listings with a Buy It Now price, and when several discounts overlap the buyer gets the best one. See our Seller Hub walkthrough for the rest of the dashboard.

Store newsletters: the core of eBay email marketing

Store newsletters are the closest thing the marketplace offers to classic email marketing. In Seller Hub, go to the Store tab, choose Store newsletter and select Create campaign. The template supplies standard store text and featured listings, and you can edit both.

Templates cover welcome emails, new products and collections, coupons, sale events and markdowns, order discounts and volume pricing. Promotional newsletters need an active discount behind them, such as a coupon, volume pricing or a sale event. You can send a campaign once or set it to repeat.

Audiences include your most recent buyers from the last 30 days, older buyers, followers and all store subscribers. Each buyer gets at most one newsletter email from you in any 14-day window, so make each send count.

Coupons, sale events and offers to buyers

A newsletter needs a reason to open it, and the Discounts section of the Marketing tab supplies one. Store subscribers can run sale events with a percentage or fixed amount off, plus volume pricing, shipping discounts and order discounts based on spend or quantity. Once a sale starts, only its name and end date can change, so set the discount value with care.

Our guide to setting up sale events and markdowns covers the setup.

Coded coupons

Public codes show in search results, on listings and at checkout. Private codes stay hidden on eBay. From the Orders page you can send coupons to previous buyers with the send coupons action, and you can print codes for orders or send coupons in bulk to buyer groups.

You can share a private code on your own channels if the terms are clearly visible and you link to eBay's Buyer Terms and Conditions. Buyers still come back to eBay to redeem it. A coupon pauses once discount spend reaches 90% of its budget limit.

Offers to watchers and cart holders

Offers to buyers reach shoppers who are watching an item or have added it to their cart. Find eligible items with the Send offers-eligible filter on the Listings tab, then send offers in bulk from Active Listings. The listing needs a Buy It Now option, and the help page says there are no additional fees apart from the standard fees for fixed-price listings.

After your first offer, you can choose to send the same offer to future interested buyers automatically. Store subscribers can also set rule-based offers from the Buyer Groups section of the Marketing tab, by category, price range and condition, lasting up to 150 days. Our walkthrough for sending offers to watchers shows each step.

Promoted Listings

Promoted Listings run from the Advertising dashboard. The general strategy charges only when a promoted item sells after a click on your ad, and the priority strategy charges per click. Read how to keep Promoted Listings campaigns profitable before stacking ads on a discount.

Order messages that bring buyers back

Order messages are the one part of eBay email marketing that can reach every buyer. Keep each one short and tied to a moment in the order.

EventWhen to sendWhat to includeWhat to leave out
Purchase thank-youSoon after paymentThanks, what happens next and your handling timeLinks or contact details outside eBay
ShippedOnce tracking is on the orderCarrier and tracking, with a note on where to follow itExact delivery date promises
Delivered check-inAfter deliveryA short check that the item arrived as expectedA feedback request in the same message
Feedback requestAfter delivery, with an optional reminderA polite request to leave feedbackBuyers with an open issue or feedback already left

Send feedback requests only after the item has arrived, and skip anyone with an open issue, an active conversation or feedback already left. Our guide to automating feedback requests covers the timing rules. Ecomli's Auto Messages applies those skip rules for you and waits until after delivery before it sends a feedback request.

Sample feedback request: Hi there, we hope your order arrived safely. If you have a moment, we'd appreciate your feedback on eBay. If anything isn't right, message us here first so we can help.

A private coupon sent from the Orders page after delivery gives a happy buyer a reason to return. For more ways to do that, read turning first-time buyers into repeat customers.

How to do this in Ecomli

Ecomli is our product; it is our pick for running buyer messages on an eBay dropshipping store. It is a non-API browser extension that works through the seller account already signed in to your desktop Chrome browser. Three features cover the order side of this guide.

  • Auto Messages sends rule-based buyer messages for purchase, shipping and feedback events. Feedback requests wait until after delivery, with an optional reminder, and buyers with open issues, existing conversations or feedback already left are skipped. The buyer still decides whether to leave feedback.
  • Tracking Conversions with Aquiline converts supported AliExpress and Amazon TBA tracking into eBay-compatible tracking and adds it to the eBay order after automatic checks, so your shipped message points to tracking the buyer can follow.
  • Overview dashboard shows eBay sales, fees, Promoted Listings costs, refunds, supplier costs and recorded profit, so you can see what a sale event or ad campaign left you with.

The automation features and tracking conversion sections on our homepage show how each piece fits. Plans start at $29 a month, and the plan comparison shows what Starter, Pro and Scale include.

Ecomli suits eBay dropshippers sourcing from Amazon and AliExpress who want order messages to run by rule and profit in one view. It does not send Store newsletters or create coupons, which stay inside Seller Hub, and it is not built for selling channels other than eBay.

Frequently asked questions

How can I find a buyer's email address on eBay?

You can't see it, because eBay's messaging system hides members' personal email addresses behind aliases and its member-to-member contact policy bars members from exchanging email addresses or phone numbers. Contact the buyer through eBay Messages from the order. To reach past buyers with marketing, use Store newsletters or send a coupon from the Orders page.

Why did I receive an offer on eBay?

Sellers can send offers to shoppers who are watching an item or have added it to their cart. If you watched a listing, the seller may have sent a discount from Seller Hub or set the same offer to go to future interested buyers automatically. Store subscribers can also send rule-based offers to buyer groups.

How do I offer combined shipping on eBay?

Turn it on in Shipping Preferences by editing "Allow combined payments and shipping" and choosing how long you will combine purchases. Unpaid buyers can use "Request total from seller" so you can invoice the combined cost, and paid buyers can get a partial shipping refund from the Orders page. Our combined shipping setup guide covers items that must ship separately.

Do I need an eBay Store to send newsletters?

Yes. eBay describes Store newsletters as a tool for eBay Store sellers, found under the Store tab in Seller Hub, and coded coupons, the Discounts tools and rule-based offers also need a Store subscription. Without a Store, offers to watchers and order messages through eBay remain your main tools.

How often can I email buyers through eBay?

Each buyer receives at most one Store newsletter email from you in any 14-day period, even if you schedule campaigns more often. Order messages are separate and belong to each purchase, so send them when there is news such as shipping or delivery. Keep every message relevant, since eBay's contact policy does not allow spam between members.

Can I share an eBay coupon code outside eBay?

Yes, with a private coded coupon. eBay lets you share private codes through your own channels as long as the terms are clearly visible and you link to eBay's Buyer Terms and Conditions, and buyers return to eBay to redeem them. Public codes appear on eBay automatically, in search results, on listings and at checkout.
