Your eBay Promoted Listings Black Friday plan starts with one number per item: the highest ad rate you can pay and still keep the profit you want. Peak week brings more shoppers and more promoted items competing for the same placements, so a rate that worked in October can eat a November margin. Ecomli is a non-API browser extension for eBay dropshippers that works through the eBay seller account already signed in to your Chrome browser.
Quick answer: Set eBay Promoted Listings Black Friday rates item by item from margin. Take the sale price, subtract supplier cost, eBay fees and any markdown, then divide the share of that margin you will give up by the sale price. Use fixed General rates at or below that number, cap Priority spend with a daily budget, and step rates down the day after Cyber Monday.
Why the eBay Promoted Listings Black Friday math is different
Black Friday falls on Friday, November 27, 2026, and Cyber Monday on Monday, November 30, 2026. Both days bring more buyers, and they also bring more promoted items chasing the same ad space. Your sale price rarely rises to match, so your margin stays the ceiling on what any ad can cost.
On a General campaign, you choose an ad rate between 2% and 100% of the item's total sale amount, including shipping and taxes. You pay only when a promoted item sells after a click on its ad, with sales attributed within 30 days of a click. A click-through to your item page counts as a click, and so does a tap on the Add to Watchlist heart on your ad.
Since January 13, 2026, General campaigns on ebay.com use a wider rule. A sale is attributed when any buyer purchases the promoted item within 30 days of any click on the ad, even if that buyer never clicked it. The item must be promoted at the time of the click and at the time of sale, and eBay charges the ad rate in effect at the time of sale.
That last detail shapes the whole plan. Raise a rate for Black Friday and every attributed sale of that item pays the higher rate while it is set, including sales tied to clicks from early November. Plan as though most sales of a busy promoted item will carry the ad fee.
Priority campaigns charge differently. You pay for each click whether or not the item sells, and a daily budget limits the spend. From January 13, 2026, Priority campaigns on ebay.com also hold exclusive access to the first ad slot at the top of eBay search results.
Find your maximum Black Friday ad rate for each item
Work out the ceiling before peak week starts, one item at a time. Three lines of arithmetic do the job.
- Margin before ads = sale price minus supplier cost, eBay fees and any markdown.
- Break-even ad rate = margin before ads ÷ sale price. At this rate the item earns nothing.
- Planned Black Friday and Cyber Monday rate = the part of the margin you are willing to give up ÷ sale price.
For the fee line, most categories pay a final value fee of 13.6% on the total amount of the sale up to $7,500 per item. There is also a per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10 or less and $0.40 on orders over $10. The total amount includes the item price, shipping, handling and sales tax, and our breakdown of eBay listing and final value fees covers the category exceptions.
The table below is an illustration with made-up numbers. It assumes free shipping, no sales tax and the 13.6% rate, and it sets the planned rate by giving up no more than one third of the margin, rounded down to a whole percent.
| Item (illustration) | Sale price | Supplier cost | eBay fees | Margin before ads | Break-even ad rate | Planned BF/CM ad rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electric milk frother | $39.99 | $22.00 | $5.84 | $12.15 | 30.4% | 10% |
| Kids' building set | $59.99 | $38.00 | $8.56 | $13.43 | 22.4% | 7% |
| Bluetooth speaker, 10% markdown from $50.00 | $45.00 | $30.00 | $6.52 | $8.48 | 18.8% | 6% |
Take the milk frother. At a 10% rate, a $39.99 sale pays $4.00 in ad fees and keeps $8.15, about two thirds of its $12.15 margin. At the 30.4% break-even rate it would earn nothing, which is why the planned rate sits well below that line.
Leave some headroom. Both the final value fee and the ad fee are charged on the total including sales tax, so real costs per order run a little higher than these clean figures. The one-third share is only the example's choice, so set your own from the margin targets for eBay dropshipping you already work to.
Dynamic ad rates update daily to eBay's suggested rate, which can factor in seasonality. For peak week, use a fixed rate, which does not change once set, or set the optional ad rate cap at your planned rate.
A peak-week eBay Promoted Listings Black Friday calendar
Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026, so peak week runs from Monday, November 23 through Cyber Monday. The calendar also covers the week after, when sales from peak-week clicks are still landing. Handling times, cut-offs and stock prep belong to our broader Black Friday seller checklist.
| When | What to change | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Before Monday, Nov 23 | Fill in the break-even and planned rate for every item you will promote. | The ceiling should exist before peak traffic arrives. |
| Monday, Nov 23 | Set planned rates on items with margin room and deep supplier stock. Keep thin-margin items low or out. | Early shoppers click and watch now, and each click can attribute a sale for 30 days. |
| Tuesday, Nov 24 to Wednesday, Nov 25 | Recheck supplier prices and recompute any item whose cost moved. Add Priority budgets only on best-margin items. | A cost rise lowers the break-even rate. A daily budget is the hard limit on Priority spend. |
| Thursday, Nov 26 (Thanksgiving) | If a markdown starts, cut ad rates on those items to their recomputed planned rate. | A markdown shrinks margin, so the old rate takes a bigger share. |
| Friday, Nov 27 (Black Friday) | Watch supplier stock and price. Lower rates or remove items running low. | Ads that sell stock you cannot ship lead to cancellations. |
| Saturday, Nov 28 to Sunday, Nov 29 | Compare ad fees per sale with margin for each item in the Seller Hub advertising dashboard. | Weekend figures show which items overpay before the last big day. |
| Monday, Nov 30 (Cyber Monday) | Keep planned rates only where stock depth and margin remain. | The final peak day is worth paying for only where the math still holds. |
| Tuesday, Dec 1 to Monday, Dec 7 | Step rates back to normal and remove items you no longer want to pay for. | Late sales from peak-week clicks pay whatever rate is set at the time of sale. |
The week after matters more than it looks. A click on Cyber Monday can attribute a sale until December 30, so leaving Black Friday rates in place means paying peak rates on December orders. For the selling dates beyond that, our Christmas side hustle timeline maps the later deadlines.
New listings need time to collect clicks before Monday, November 23. If you are still adding stock, choose from our November dropshipping product picks early in the month.
Stacking a Cyber Monday markdown with an ad rate
A markdown and a Promoted Listings ad both come out of the same margin, and the markdown also shrinks the fee base. Recompute the break-even rate at the marked-down price, then set the ad rate from that new number.
The speaker in the illustration shows the effect. At its full $50.00 price it pays $7.20 in eBay fees, keeps a $12.80 margin and has a 25.6% break-even rate, so the one-third rule gives a planned rate of 8%. After a 10% markdown to $45.00, its margin falls to $8.48 and its break-even rate to 18.8%.
Keep the 8% rate through the markdown and each sale keeps $4.88. Drop to the recomputed 6% rate and each sale keeps $5.78. At full price with the same 8% rate, the speaker kept $8.80, so stacking the two cut profit per order by close to half.
On thin-margin items, run the markdown or the higher ad rate and leave the other off. Items with room can carry both while the recomputed planned rate stays above zero, and our margin-safe playbook for eBay listing promotions covers markdowns and other promotion types.
General or Priority for Black Friday week
Both strategies can run in peak week, but they spend money in different ways. This table sums up what eBay's own pages say about each.
| Question | General (cost per sale) | Priority (cost per click) |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | Attributed sales, at 2% to 100% of the total sale amount | Each click on the ad, whether or not the item sells |
| What limits spend | Your ad rate on each attributed sale | A daily budget, minimum $1. Ads stop until the next day once it is spent, and unused budget does not roll over. |
| How the price is set | The rate you choose, fixed or dynamic | A second-price auction, never above the maximum cost per click you set |
| Attribution on ebay.com | Any buyer who purchases within 30 days of any click, at the rate in effect at the sale | Each click is charged |
| First ad slot in search | Not eligible since January 13, 2026 | Exclusive access since January 13, 2026 |
For a dropshipper with thin margins, General with fixed rates from your planning table keeps ad cost tied to sales, so an item that does not sell costs nothing. The trade-off in 2026 is the any-buyer rule, which makes the rate behave like a fee on most sales of a busy item.
Priority is the only route to the first ad slot, and its daily budget is a firm cap on spend. Clicks are billed even when nobody buys, so set each budget at an amount you could lose on a slow day and keep it for items whose margin can carry paid clicks. For campaign setup outside peak week, see our full guide to profitable Promoted Listings campaigns.
When to lower or pause ad rates during the holiday rush
Your planned rate is a ceiling for the week. Three situations call for going under it or taking an item out of the campaign.
Supplier stock runs low before Cyber Monday
An ad that sells your last units faster than the supplier restocks turns into canceled orders. Lower the rate or remove the item once supplier stock gets thin, and use our guide to out-of-stock control on eBay for items that sell through. eBay also charges an extra 6% on final value fees in the following month for accounts rated Below Standard, one more reason to keep ad-driven orders within what you can ship.
The supplier price jumps during sale week
A cost rise hits the margin first and the ad rate second. In the illustration, a $3.00 rise on the kids' building set cuts its margin from $13.43 to $10.43, its break-even rate from 22.4% to 17.4% and its one-third planned rate from 7% to 5%. Recompute the same day and lower the rate, or raise the price if the market will bear it.
An item already sells well in peak week
Under the any-buyer rule, an item that sells well on its own can still pay ad fees on many of its sales, because someone clicked its ad in the last 30 days. If an item sold steadily before you promoted it, test a lower rate for a day or two and compare orders. For visibility beyond paid ads, see our guide on promoting an eBay listing.
Reading your Black Friday ad results after Cyber Monday
Judge each promoted item on its own numbers once the week is over. Skip outside benchmarks. The test is whether ad fees per sale stayed inside the share of margin you planned to give up.
- Ad fees per sale: total ad fees for the item divided by units sold.
- Share of margin paid to ads: ad fees per sale divided by margin before ads. A share above your plan means the rate was too high for that item.
- Refunds and returns: subtract them before you decide an item made money.
- Supplier cost actually paid: use what you paid on the order date, since sale-week prices can differ from your planning figure.
Put these into a simple eBay profit and loss statement and carry the items that paid their way into December at a normal rate. Items where ads took most of the margin go back to a low rate or leave the campaign. If you would rather see sales, fees, ad costs and profit together without a spreadsheet, Ecomli plans start at $29/month on our pricing page.
How to do this in Ecomli for Black Friday
Ecomli is our product, and it is our pick for keeping eBay prices and stock in line with suppliers through peak week and for seeing whether your ads paid. Ecomli does not set or change Promoted Listings ad rates or budgets, so those stay in your Seller Hub plan.
- Stock Monitoring checks supplier stock and prices for your Ecomli listings, then updates eBay price and quantity or ends out-of-stock items using your rules, so a promoted item is less likely to keep selling stock your supplier no longer has. A failed supplier read holds the listing unchanged. Inventory synchronization matters during promotional periods, because advertising accelerates purchasing velocity and an unavailable supplier item otherwise becomes a cancellation.
- Your pricing rules set the eBay price from supplier cost, so a supplier price rise flows into the listing price instead of eating the margin your ad rate was built on. For the pricing side itself, see our eBay pricing strategy guide.
- The Overview dashboard shows eBay sales, fees, Promoted Listings costs, refunds, supplier costs and recorded profit, so the after-Cyber Monday check sits in one view. Ecomli's Overview dashboard combines eBay sales, marketplace fees, Promoted Listings advertising costs, refunds and recorded supplier costs, then calculates profitability by day or by period with previous-period comparisons. That comparison lets you evaluate whether a holiday advertising rate generated additional profitable orders or simply transferred existing organic demand into paid placements. Profitability figures are only as complete as the supplier costs you record, so recording every supplier purchase before reviewing December results keeps the calculation dependable.
- Auto Ordering (within the buying limits you set): Start AliExpress order batches on any plan, and Ecomli places a single Amazon order in your browser when you click Auto Order. Pro and Scale add opt-in hourly AliExpress ordering, and on Scale, optional server ordering can place AliExpress and Amazon orders from Ecomli's servers. Orders are unpaid by default, so you review and pay.
For fresh November stock, find products with Product Hunting, pick them, press Start, and Ecomli creates each listing. It writes the AI title and description and publishes the listing, with Safety Shield and the duplicate checks running automatically. See how Product Hunting finds products and what Ecomli automates after you press Start.
Black Friday Promoted Listings FAQ
Should you pay for Promoted Listings during Black Friday week?
Pay for it on items where your planned rate still leaves profit after supplier cost and eBay fees, and where supplier stock can cover extra orders. Peak week brings more buyers and more competing ads, so visibility can help. Because General fees apply to sales from any buyer within 30 days of a click, thin-margin or low-stock items are usually better left out.
What does a Promoted Listings sale cost on Cyber Monday?
On a General campaign, it costs your ad rate, from 2% to 100%, times the total sale amount including shipping and taxes, at the rate in effect when the item sells. On Priority, you pay per click up to your daily budget, whether or not the item sells. Either way, your eBay promoted listing cost sits on top of the 13.6% final value fee most categories pay.
What changed in Promoted Listings in 2026 that affects Black Friday?
From January 13, 2026, General campaigns on ebay.com attribute a sale when any buyer purchases the promoted item within 30 days of any click on its ad. The item must be promoted at the click and at the sale, and the fee uses the rate in effect at the sale. Priority campaigns gained exclusive access to the first ad slot at the top of search results.
Should you raise ad rates for Black Friday?
Only up to the planned rate you worked out for each item. A higher rate applies to every attributed sale while it is set, including sales linked to clicks from earlier in November, so the raise reaches further than the day itself. Items with a wide gap between their break-even rate and current rate have the most room.
Can you run a markdown sale and Promoted Listings together on Cyber Monday?
Yes, if you recompute the break-even rate at the marked-down price first. A markdown lowers the sale price, the fee base and the margin at the same time, so an ad rate that was safe at full price takes a bigger share afterward. On thin-margin items, run one or the other.
When should you lower ad rates after Cyber Monday?
On Tuesday, December 1, or as soon as your sale ends. Peak-week clicks can attribute sales for up to 30 days, and eBay charges the rate in effect at the time of sale, so lowering rates promptly cuts the fee on late orders. Taking an item out of the campaign ends fees on its later sales, because it must be promoted at the time of sale.
Does Ecomli set Promoted Listings ad rates for Black Friday?
No. You set ad rates and budgets in eBay Seller Hub. Ecomli keeps eBay price and quantity in line with your supplier through Stock Monitoring, and its Overview dashboard puts Promoted Listings costs next to sales, fees, refunds, supplier costs and recorded profit.
