Quick answer: To learn how to leave feedback on eBay as a seller, go to Seller Hub, open Orders, select the sale and choose Leave feedback, then pick Positive, write a short comment and submit. Sellers can only leave positive feedback for buyers, and they have up to 90 days after the transaction completes. Buyers rate you from their purchase history within 60 days of receiving the item.
Feedback is the public record of every sale you make, and eBay sets different rules for each side of the transaction. Below are the seller steps, the buyer steps your customers follow, the time windows, the limits on replies and revision requests, and what to do when the Leave feedback button is missing. Later on, you will also see where Ecomli, a non-API browser extension for eBay dropshippers, fits in. If you would rather not do it by hand, our walkthrough of eBay's automatic feedback setting covers the built-in automation.
How to leave feedback on eBay: the rules at a glance
Most confusion about feedback comes from mixing up the buyer rules and the seller rules. The table below puts them side by side, using eBay's own help pages as the source.
| Rule | Seller leaving feedback for a buyer | Buyer leaving feedback for a seller |
|---|---|---|
| Ratings allowed | Positive only | Positive, neutral or negative, plus detailed ratings |
| Time limit | Up to 90 days after the transaction completes | 60 days from delivery or the expected delivery date, whichever comes first; 90 days from purchase if no expected date was given |
| Where to do it | Seller Hub or My eBay, Selling, Orders | Purchase history |
| Photos | No | Up to 5 photos of the item |
| Who is excluded | Nobody with a completed sale | Guest checkouts and accounts younger than 5 days |
| Changing it later | No edits; one follow-up comment | Only through a revision request you send within 30 days |
One more rule matters for sellers. If a buyer doesn't leave feedback within 7 days of a delivery confirmed by tracking, the item arrived on time and eBay sees nothing wrong with the order, eBay adds automated positive feedback to your profile. The buyer can still replace it with their own rating within 60 days of delivery.
How to leave feedback on eBay for a buyer
eBay recommends leaving feedback as soon as the buyer has paid. Waiting gains you nothing, because you can't leave anything other than a positive rating. The steps on desktop:
- Open Seller Hub, or go to My eBay and select Selling.
- Select Orders.
- Tick the order, or several orders, and choose Leave feedback.
- Select Positive, type a comment and select Leave feedback to post it.
Selecting several orders at once is the fastest manual route for a busy week. Keep three or four stock comments ready so you aren't writing from scratch each time:
- "Quick payment and clear communication. Thank you for your order."
- "Smooth transaction from start to finish. Welcome back any time."
- "Paid promptly. A pleasure to sell to."
Avoid pairing a positive rating with a critical comment. eBay removes positive feedback that carries a negative comment because it confuses other members. If a buyer has broken eBay's rules, use the report a buyer route instead, and if you never want to sell to that person again, see our guide on how to block a buyer on eBay.
You can't edit or delete feedback after posting it. You can add one follow-up comment with the Follow up option, and that follow-up can't be edited or retracted either, so write it once and keep it factual.
How buyers leave feedback for sellers
The buyer steps tell you what your customers are asked to rate. eBay emails buyers a reminder after the purchase. From their purchase history, the buyer:
- Finds the item and selects Leave feedback.
- Gives an overall rating, positive, neutral or negative.
- Rates the details: whether the item arrived on time, how accurate the description was, the shipping cost and your communication.
- Writes a comment and can add up to 5 photos.
Those detailed ratings are why delivery speed and tracking matter so much. A buyer who waits on a parcel with no tracking update is far more likely to mark you down on arrival time, even if the item itself is perfect. Our guide to eBay seller performance metrics explains how late shipments and cases feed into your seller level alongside feedback.
Each rating moves the feedback score by one point: plus 1 for positive, 0 for neutral and minus 1 for negative. Several ratings from the same buyer in the same week, Monday through Sunday Pacific Time, count only once. Your profile shows the score in brackets after your username and your positive percentage, and a score of 10 earns the first yellow star.
Why can't I leave feedback on eBay?
When the Leave feedback option doesn't appear, the cause is almost always one of these:
- The window has closed. Sellers have 90 days after the transaction completes. Buyers have 60 days from delivery, or 90 days from purchase when no delivery date was given.
- Feedback is already posted. Each transaction gets one rating per side. A seller can only add a follow-up comment.
- The buyer checked out as a guest. Guest purchases can't carry feedback in either direction.
- The account is too new. Buyers need an account that is at least 5 days old.
- You are looking in the wrong place. Sellers work from Selling, then Orders. Buyers work from purchase history. If the button is missing in the eBay app, try the same steps on the desktop site.
Replying to feedback and asking for a revision
You can't leave negative feedback for buyers, but you can answer what they say about you. Open your Feedback profile, find the comment and select Reply. You get one reply per comment, and it can't be edited or retracted, so a calm, factual answer reads best to future buyers: state what happened and what you did to fix it.
If you put things right after a buyer has left neutral or negative feedback, you can send a feedback revision request. The rules from eBay's help page:
- The feedback must be less than 30 days old.
- You get 5 requests per calendar year, plus 5 more for every 1,000 feedback ratings you receive that year.
- The buyer has 10 days to revise or decline, and the request expires if they do nothing.
Because the allowance is small, save revision requests for buyers whose complaint you have actually settled, such as a replacement that arrived or a refund that cleared. Our guide to eBay item not received cases covers how to settle the most common complaint before it turns into a rating.
How to get buyers to leave positive feedback
Leaving feedback for buyers is the easy half. Getting buyers to rate you is where your profile actually grows, and it comes down to three things: deliver on time, show tracking the buyer can follow, and ask politely after the parcel arrives.
For dropshippers, each of those has a weak point. Supplier stock can run out after a sale, supplier tracking numbers don't always read cleanly on eBay, and nobody has time to message every buyer by hand.
This is where Ecomli fits. Ecomli is a non-API browser extension for eBay dropshippers that works through the eBay seller account already signed in to your desktop Chrome browser, so there is no API connection to authorize. It covers the jobs that sit behind good feedback:
- Auto Messages sends rule-based buyer messages for purchase, shipping and feedback events. Feedback requests wait until after delivery, with an optional reminder, and buyers with open issues, existing conversations or feedback already left are skipped.
- Tracking Conversions converts tracking numbers from supported AliExpress and Amazon TBA supplier orders into eBay-compatible tracking, so the buyer can follow the delivery from their eBay order. That is the same on-time tracked delivery that earns eBay's automated positive feedback. Our guide to adding a tracking number on eBay covers the manual version.
- Stock Monitoring checks supplier stock and prices for your Ecomli listings and updates the eBay quantity or ends the listing using your rules, which cuts the out-of-stock cancellations that tend to produce negative ratings.
None of this promises a rating. Buyers decide that. What it does is remove the most common reasons a buyer has to complain, and it asks at the right moment. You can see what each plan includes on the Ecomli pricing page.
Feedback also sits inside a wider set of store risks. Our eBay dropshipping risk management playbook maps late tracking, stock-outs and buyer complaints to the Ecomli controls that handle each one.
Frequently asked questions
How do I leave feedback for a buyer on eBay?
Go to Seller Hub or My eBay, select Selling, then Orders. Choose the order, select Leave feedback, pick Positive, add a comment and submit. You have up to 90 days after the transaction completes.
Do I need to leave feedback for my buyers on eBay?
No, it is optional. Many sellers leave it as soon as the buyer pays because it is quick, it is always positive and it can be automated with eBay's built-in setting.
Can sellers leave negative feedback for buyers?
No. eBay only lets sellers leave positive feedback for buyers. If a buyer breaks eBay's rules, report the buyer, and block them if you don't want future orders from that account.
How long do you have to leave feedback on eBay?
Sellers have up to 90 days after the transaction completes. Buyers have 60 days from receiving the item or the expected delivery date, whichever comes first, or 90 days from purchase if no expected delivery date was provided.
Why is eBay not letting me leave feedback?
The usual reasons are an expired window, feedback already posted, a guest checkout or a buyer account younger than 5 days. Check that you are in Selling, then Orders as a seller, or purchase history as a buyer.
Can I change feedback I left on eBay?
Sellers can't edit feedback once posted, but can add one follow-up comment. Buyers can only change their rating when the seller sends a revision request within 30 days and the buyer accepts it.
